On June 22, Petr Zich, Head of the Council of Europe’s Baku office, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the information provided to elchi by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, a strong protest was expressed regarding the decision of the European Court of Human Rights against our country dated June 18, and it was emphasized that this decision is unfair, biased, and contrary to the provisions of international law.
It was stated that while the decision dated June 16, 2016, in the case of “Chiragov and Others v. Armenia” confirmed the de facto occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and the existence of the occupying regime with Armenia’s direct military and financial support, the current decision’s reference to those territories as an independent entity called the “NKR” is contrary to international law and judicial procedures.
Furthermore, an objection was raised regarding the use of terminology in the court’s aforementioned decision that contradicts Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized sovereignty and territorial integrity. It was noted that the inclusion of phrases such as “contact line between Azerbaijan and the ‘NKR'”, as well as references to the army, authorities, prosecutor general, and ombudsman of the puppet regime in the decision, is an attempt to legitimize the former illegal separatist regime.
During the meeting, it was conveyed that the Republic of Azerbaijan categorically rejects this decision of the court, and that the Azerbaijani side will consider all possible means and take appropriate steps to protect its legitimate interests.
