Proposal made for the creation of a bone marrow donor bank in Azerbaijan

A proposal has been made for the creation of a bone marrow donor bank in Azerbaijan.

APA reports that MP Soltan Mammadov made this proposal during the discussion of the draft law “On the execution of the 2025 state budget of the Republic of Azerbaijan” at today’s session of the Milli Majlis.

Soltan Mammadov noted that the successful implementation of the compulsory health insurance system in the healthcare sector, which is one of the priority directions of our socially-oriented state policy, is yielding positive results:

“In this regard, I would like to emphasize a few issues. The continuous expansion of the service package within the framework of the compulsory health insurance system, increasing the population’s access to medical services, and improving the quality of medical services provided are important issues. At the same time, special importance should be given to expanding preventive measures and strengthening the primary healthcare system. Thus, in both developed and developing countries, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been observed that expenditures in both directions I mentioned have increased significantly. In European region countries, the share of expenditures allocated to primary healthcare services in total health expenditures has averaged 15-20 percent, and the share of funds allocated to preventive measures has been 3-7 percent. Increasing expenditures on preventive measures and the primary healthcare system serves to optimize total health expenditures and prevent the overloading of the healthcare system. From this point of view, I believe that there is a need to further deepen reforms in this direction in the future.”

The MP pointed out that the allocation of 5 million manats for bone marrow transplantation operations in the healthcare expenditure section of the presented 2025 state budget report is a very commendable fact:

“Today, there is a great need for this support for children suffering from hereditary blood diseases. In recent years, along with performing bone marrow transplantation operations abroad, a number of measures have been taken to carry them out within the country. It is commendable that these operations are performed in both state and private medical institutions. Along with this, there is a need to expand human resources, create a bone marrow donor bank, and in this way, eliminate the limitation of operations performed within the country to only first-degree relative donors. Furthermore, considering the positive results of state programs successfully implemented in the healthcare sector over the years, I believe it is important to continue work on allocating additional financial resources for the treatment of hereditary and rare childhood diseases.”
