Ilham Aliyev: We will produce 8 gigawatts of solar and wind energy by 2032

Azerbaijan plans to achieve large-scale and strategic goals in both food security and renewable energy in the coming years.

elchi reports that President Ilham Aliyev said this at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group held in Baku.

Speaking about the goals in the agricultural sector, the head of state said:

“With the recently adopted state program on the development of agriculture, our plans in the field of food security are very clear. We plan to achieve maximum self-sufficiency in basic consumer products. The irrigation process — and I am grateful to the Islamic Development Bank for helping us with irrigation through the construction of canals and reservoirs — will allow farmers to gain access to water and have higher productivity of their products.”

President Ilham Aliyev also revealed Azerbaijan’s huge potential in the field of green energy and the status of real contracts:

“Renewable energy is a great potential. Contracts already signed with international and local companies will provide us with a minimum of 8 gigawatts of solar and wind energy by 2032. This is still the minimum. These are contracts that have already been signed, but there will be more in the future.”

The head of state emphasized that most of the green energy to be produced will be exported:

“Now we are working on transmission lines for export, because we will not need all the energy I mentioned domestically. That is, transmission lines will be built to destinations that need energy, and this, first of all, is definitely Europe. Because everyone knows that they will need electricity for many years to come. So, all this is in our strategic priority plans.”
