The ban on bringing nuclear weapons into Japan may be lifted

The “Japan Innovation Party,” which is a junior partner in the ruling coalition, advocates for equipping the Navy with nuclear-powered submarines and proposes discussing the lifting of the ban on bringing nuclear weapons into the country. This was stated in the party’s official document.

“Elchi” reports that the Kyodo news agency provided information about the document, which will soon be submitted to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for consideration.

This position of the party was formed in connection with the start of drafting projects to review Tokyo’s fundamental security policy principles. The process is planned to be completed by the end of the year. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the main force in the ruling coalition, has already prepared its proposals. Although the issues of nuclear-powered submarines and lifting the ban on bringing in nuclear weapons are not mentioned in those proposals, it is reported that there are many supporters of this position within the LDP.

In Japan, the “three non-nuclear principles” are in effect: not possessing, not producing, and not bringing nuclear weapons into the country. These principles were approved by a government decision, do not have the force of law, and can be reviewed relatively easily. The “Japan Innovation Party” and many forces within the ruling LDP propose keeping the first two principles but abandoning the third. In their view, this ban could prevent the entry of U.S. nuclear weapons into the country in crisis situations. Kyodo notes that, according to proponents of this clause, the change will serve to increase the deterrent power of the alliance between Tokyo and Washington.
