This year, the day of Ashura falls on June 25.
elchi reports that theologian and responsible employee of the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO), Samid Guliyev, stated this to Trend.
According to him, June 16 is the first day of the month of Muharram in Azerbaijan.
“This date is also considered the beginning of the year 1448 according to the Hijri-Qamari calendar. The month of Muharram, which holds special significance in Islamic history, is the first month of the Hijri-Qamari calendar and is an important period for Muslims to remember examples of spiritual values, sacrifice, patience, and faith. This month calls on people to look into their inner spiritual worlds and further strengthen feelings of kindness and compassion,” he said.
The theologian noted that one of the most important days of the month of Muharram is the day of Ashura.
“This year, the day of Ashura falls on June 25, 2026. The day of Ashura is associated with the tragedy of Karbala, which is considered one of the saddest and at the same time most honorable events in Islamic history. During this event, which took place in the year 61 of the Hijri calendar, the Prophet’s (pbuh) grandson, Imam Hussein, and his companions were martyred for the sake of truth, justice, and spiritual values. For centuries, the Karbala event has lived on in the memory of Muslims as a symbol of the struggle against oppression, steadfastness on the path of truth, and spiritual heroism. For this reason, the month of Muharram is also valued as an embodiment of human dignity, freedom of conscience, and the struggle for justice,” the theologian emphasized.
“Throughout the month of Muharram in Azerbaijan, various ceremonies, sermons, and religious-educational events are organized in mosques and religious venues. Believers commemorate the martyrs of Karbala and promote ideas of unity, solidarity, and spiritual perfection. Especially on the day of Ashura, humanitarian initiatives such as providing aid to those in need, participating in blood donation campaigns, and charitable activities are widely supported,” he added.
