The world is temporarily on track to exceed the 1.5°C temperature limit.
elchi reports that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated this in a video message sent to the international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED), hosted by Azerbaijan.
He stated that there must be a transition from traditional energy to renewable energy.
“Every increase in temperature leads to greater damage, especially for the most vulnerable population groups. Our task is to make this as small, short-term, and safe as possible, while also rapidly bringing temperatures back down. This means sharply reducing emissions and accelerating the transition from traditional energy to renewable energy sources through a phased and fair approach. This is the only sustainable way to reduce costs and ensure true energy security. It also means reducing methane emissions, which is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to limit near-term warming,” the UN Secretary-General emphasized.
Guterres noted that protecting forests, lands, and seas, and supporting communities already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change is also essential: “At the same time, fulfilling the climate finance pledges made to developing countries is of vital importance. This will help save lives, protect livelihoods, and make economies more resilient. This is the very moment to take action for the sake of our environment and our future.”
