World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that attacks on the health sector in Lebanon continue to claim lives and restrict people’s access to healthcare services.
elchi reports that Ghebreyesus shared a post on his social media platform account (formerly Twitter) regarding the situation in Lebanon, where Israeli attacks continue despite the ceasefire.
He stated, “Attacks on the health sector in Lebanon continue to claim lives and restrict people’s access to healthcare services,” and noted that in recent clashes in southern Lebanon, two of the city’s three hospitals have been subjected to multiple attacks.
Ghebreyesus stated that according to preliminary reports, 39 healthcare workers were injured yesterday at Jabal Amel Hospital, and the hospital’s emergency and intensive care units were severely damaged in the attacks. Emphasizing that Hiram Hospital in the city of Tyre, southern Lebanon, was damaged in attacks on May 22 and 31, Ghebreyesus noted that 37 healthcare workers were injured there.
Ghebreyesus said: “Despite the damage, these hospitals continue to manage the influx of patients resulting from mass casualty incidents.”
Pointing out that the WHO has verified 191 attacks on healthcare services since the escalation of conflicts after March 2, Ghebreyesus said: “These attacks have resulted in 128 deaths and 371 injuries among healthcare workers and patients. The WHO reiterates its call for the protection of healthcare services, healthcare workers, patients, and medical facilities in accordance with international humanitarian law.”
