Negotiations on Moldova and Ukraine’s accession to the EU are planned to begin during an intergovernmental conference to be held in Luxembourg on June 15.
elchi reports that the European publication “Politico” has provided information on this, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels.
According to the sources, Hungary, which had previously blocked the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the union due to issues regarding the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia, has signaled that it will lift its veto. The publication also notes that Budapest has not yet given official consent, but sources claim that after the European Commission promised to release 16.4 billion euros in EU funds frozen during Viktor Orban’s years in power for Hungary, his rival and successor Peter Magyar will confirm the start of negotiations with Kyiv.
The decision to start negotiations must be approved unanimously by EU countries.
No EU country objected to holding negotiations with Moldova, but in accordance with the European Union’s enlargement practice, this country is closely linked to Ukraine within the same “group” or “enlargement wave,” and they can only go through all stages of this process synchronously (at the same time).
The start of accession negotiations does not guarantee the country’s membership in the EU and does not set any timeframe for this process. For example, Turkey began negotiations to join the EU in 2005, but the prospects for their completion are still not visible today.
