Fossils of a long-necked herbivorous dinosaur species, estimated to weigh approximately 27 tons and measure tens of meters in length, have been discovered in Thailand.
“Elchi” reports that a research team led by University College London in the UK examined 10 different fossil remains found in the Chaiyaphum region of northeastern Thailand, including a leg bone approximately 1.78 meters long.
Scientists, who named the new dinosaur species “Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis” and estimated it weighed about 27 tons, stated that the dinosaur lived 100-120 million years ago during the Cretaceous period.
Researchers emphasized that the species is one of the largest long-necked herbivorous dinosaur species ever discovered in Southeast Asia.
Lead author of the study and PhD student at University College London, Titivut Setapanikakul, stated that this species belongs to the “sauropod” family, which includes giant long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs such as “Diplodocus” and “Brontosaurus”.
Setapanikakul noted that the dinosaur, which he dubbed “Thailand’s latest giant,” reached a length of approximately 27 meters, comparable in size to an adult blue whale. The details of the study were published in the journal “Scientific Reports”.
