WHO: Risk of Hantavirus for the global population remains low

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that they continue to assess the risk of hantavirus, which became a global concern after being detected on a cruise ship, as “low for the global population.”
“Elchi” reports that Ghebreyesus made a statement regarding the events following the detection of hantavirus on the “MV Hondius” ship, which sails under the Dutch flag, on his social media platform account of the US-based X company.
Ghebreyesus stated that no new deaths related to hantavirus have been recorded since May 2 and said: “Of the 11 cases reported to the WHO, 8 have been confirmed by laboratory tests to be Andes virus infection. The remaining cases are undergoing further testing. The WHO continues to assess the risk to the global population as low.”
Ghebreyesus noted that they are in close contact with experts from all relevant countries and continue to receive weekly reports on the health and well-being of the passengers and crew evacuated from the ship through official international health regulation channels. Ghebreyesus stated that “International coordination continues to support efforts to protect public health.”
