The US Armed Forces have canceled the deployment of more than 4,000 soldiers to Poland.
“Elchi” reports that military sources informed “Defense News” about this.
They stated that the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, the 1st Cavalry Division, and relevant military equipment were planned to be sent to the country. A US Army spokesperson confirmed the cancellation of the deployment but declined to provide further details, referring all questions to the Pentagon. The US Department of Defense, for its part, did not respond to a request for comment from “Defense News.”
According to the portal, information regarding the change in plans began to spread among military personnel on the morning of May 11. Soldiers informed their friends and families about the decision. However, during budget hearings in Congress on May 12, neither Army Secretary Dan Driscoll nor Deputy Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve mentioned the cancellation of the deployment to Poland.
Meanwhile, Senator Jack Reed stated that the US Army is facing a budget deficit of at least $2 billion due to long-term operations, including the deployment of the National Guard to Washington and the participation of units in border security. However, according to a report by Army officials reviewed by “ABC News,” the Pentagon’s budget deficit is significantly higher, ranging from $4 billion to $6 billion.
Prior to this, against the backdrop of disagreements between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the US Department of Defense had announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany. As a result, the number of American troops in Europe would return to levels seen before Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The troops could also be relocated to Poland.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that his country is ready to host more American soldiers. He emphasized that a stronger US presence would help strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and ensure the defense of Europe. Currently, more than 10,000 American soldiers are rotating within Polish territory.
