Saudi fighter jets bombed groups in Iraq against the backdrop of war with Iran

Saudi Arabian fighter jets have struck targets linked to powerful Tehran-backed Shiite militias in Iraq during the war with Iran, while retaliatory strikes were also launched into Iraq from Kuwait.

“Elchi” reports, citing Reuters, that several sources familiar with the matter have stated this.

According to a Western official and a person familiar with the situation, the Saudi strikes were carried out by the Kingdom’s Air Force against facilities of Iran-linked groups near Saudi Arabia’s northern border with Iraq. The Western official added that some of the strikes occurred on April 7, on the eve of a ceasefire reached between the US and Iran.

According to the sources, the purpose of the strikes was to target sites from which drones (UAVs) and missiles were launched at Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries.

Iraqi sources, citing military assessments, stated that at least two missile strikes were launched into Iraq from Kuwaiti territory. A series of strikes in April hit militant positions in southern Iraq, resulting in the deaths of several fighters and the destruction of a facility used by the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah group for drone control and communications. Reuters could not determine whether the missiles fired from Kuwait were launched by the Kuwaiti armed forces or by US military personnel, who have a large contingent stationed there.
