Ofcom, Britain’s communications regulator, has fined the operator of an online forum dedicated to suicide £950,000 (approximately $1.28 million).
“Elchi” reports that the official statement notes the regulator is not disclosing the name of the forum or its provider due to the nature of the content posted. According to Ofcom, this service is linked to more than 130 deaths in the UK.
The agency determined that the platform hosted materials that encouraged or facilitated suicide, which constitutes a criminal offense in the country. This specifically concerns instructions and discussions that could influence vulnerable users.
“This is a significant fine for a suicide forum known for exploiting the most vulnerable members of society,” said Suzanne Cater, Ofcom’s Director of Enforcement.
According to her, the measures taken by the provider to restrict access from the UK have been insufficient: the site can still be accessed without a VPN, and blocking measures are not applied consistently.
Ofcom reported that during the investigation, which lasted from March 2025 to April 2026, illegal content was regularly discovered on the platform. The regulator also noted that risks were not properly assessed and the measures taken to remove materials were ineffective.
The provider, whose headquarters are located outside the UK, must rectify the violations within 10 business days. Otherwise, Ofcom intends to apply to the court with a request to completely block access to the forum in the country.
