The US administration is continuing diplomatic talks with Denmark to expand its military presence in Greenland. According to sources close to the matter, the parties have made significant progress in negotiations in recent months.
“Elchi” reports that the Washington administration is planning to open three new military bases in the south of the island. This move is seen as an effort to manage diplomatic tensions in the region following President Donald Trump’s previous statements regarding Greenland.
The White House has confirmed that high-level contacts with Denmark and Greenland are ongoing and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the talks.
Maritime traffic will be monitored
It is noted that the newly planned bases will be aimed at monitoring the activities of Russia and China in the North Atlantic. These facilities, which will be strategically located in the region known as the “GIUK Gap,” are expected to play an important role, especially in monitoring maritime traffic.
One of the notable points in the negotiations is the proposal that the new bases be officially considered US sovereign territory. Initially, the Narsarsuaq area, where a former military airfield is located, is reported to be the strongest candidate for the base. Experts predict that areas with existing port and airport infrastructure will be preferred to reduce costs.
Diplomatic process is being conducted professionally
Despite Trump’s past harsh rhetoric, it is emphasized that the current negotiations are being conducted quietly and professionally by a small working group established in Washington. It is reported that Michael Needham from the State Department is leading the process and has met with his Danish counterparts at least five times since January.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it has ongoing diplomatic channels with the US but refrained from providing details. It is reported that the Copenhagen administration is sensitive to US military expansion demands while maintaining its own red lines.
