Speaker of the Milli Majlis participated in the summit of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean

Today, the 1st Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of member and partner countries of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean was held.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova participated in the Summit. In her speech at the Summit, Sahiba Gafarova stated that over the past 20 years, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean has established itself as an important platform for developing inter-parliamentary cooperation and promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility for the sake of peace and stability in a region of strategic importance.
Stating that although Azerbaijan is not geographically part of the Mediterranean region, it has long-term ties and constructive relations with the Mediterranean basin and Gulf countries, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis said that Azerbaijan contributes to regional and international energy security through the diversification of energy routes and supplies. In addition, it was noted that our country plays an active role in the development of transport links between East and West, especially within the framework of the Middle Corridor. These efforts contribute to strengthening cooperation and promoting common economic resilience.
Welcoming the Assembly’s decision to grant observer status to the parliaments of both Azerbaijan and Armenia, Sahiba Gafarova said that these countries, as President Ilham Aliyev noted, are learning to live in peace after a conflict that lasted for decades. This step can contribute to the development of dialogue and confidence-building between the two countries in line with ongoing efforts towards peace and normalization. Stating that our parliaments are also working towards building trust between the two peoples, Sahiba Gafarova said that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean could become another important platform for constructive cooperation.
At the same time, the importance of signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean was noted.
