Japan has imported oil from Russia for the first time since 2025

Japan’s “Taiyo Oil” company has purchased oil from Russia for the first time since 2025 as part of its efforts to diversify supply sources outside the Middle East.

“Elchi” reports that TASS has provided information regarding this matter.

According to a Taiyo Oil spokesperson, the company bears a social responsibility to ensure a stable supply of petroleum products. To this end, it utilizes national oil reserves and makes efforts to diversify supplies.

A company representative noted that sanctions do not apply to the supply of Sakhalin Blend crude oil.

According to the “Kommersant” newspaper, in recent years, Japan has sourced 95% of its oil supply from the Middle East. A large portion of this import is carried out through the Strait of Hormuz.

Since 2022, an exemption has been in effect for the import of Russian oil from Sakhalin-2, which is vital for Japan’s energy security. “Taiyo Oil” last purchased Russian oil in June 2025.
