The US uses artificial intelligence to detect Iranian mines

The US Navy is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities to detect Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz and accelerate their neutralization operations.

elchi reports that Reuters has provided information on this matter.

A $100 million contract signed with Domino Data Lab, a San Francisco-based company specializing in artificial intelligence, could significantly speed up this process. The company’s software has the ability to teach underwater drones to recognize new types of mines in just a few days.

“Previously, ships were engaged in searching for mines,” said Thomas Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of Domino, in an interview with Reuters. “Now, this is the task of artificial intelligence. The fleet is paying for a platform that allows for the training, management, and deployment of artificial intelligence at the necessary speed in contested waters that hinder global trade and endanger sailors.”

Last week, the US Navy signed a $99.7 million contract to expand the role of the Domino platform. This platform will serve as the “AI backbone” for the Navy’s AMMO (Accelerated Machine Learning for Maritime Operations) project. The program in question aims to make the process of detecting underwater mines faster, more accurate, and less dependent on the involvement of sailors.
