Critical artificial intelligence agreement between the Pentagon and Google

The Pentagon has reached an agreement with Google to use Gemini, a powerful artificial intelligence system, on “classified” networks. Signed with the goal of turning the military into an “AI-first war force” by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, this contract places Google on par with giants like OpenAI and xAI.
“Elchi” reports that in recent months, the Pentagon has been seeking to sign new contracts with the four largest US artificial intelligence companies, allowing their systems to be used for “any lawful purpose.”
Intelligence ties that began in July with Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI have resulted in formal contracts with Google and OpenAI.
Google was already providing services to the military on non-classified systems; however, the new agreement paves the way for Gemini to be used in more critical and covert operations, such as intelligence analysis and target support.
Anthropic Crisis and Security Disputes
The agreement process was overshadowed by tensions with another player in the sector, Anthropic. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s firm guarantees that artificial intelligence would not be used for “mass surveillance” or the “control of lethal autonomous weapons” were rejected by the Pentagon. After Secretary Hegseth declared Anthropic a “national security risk” and President Trump banned federal agencies from using the company’s products, the matter went to court. However, Google avoided a similar public conflict by accepting a “lawful use” clause similar to OpenAI’s.
