In a vote held on Tuesday, the European Parliament voted to revoke the parliamentary immunity of four Polish MEPs, including Grzegorz Braun, leader of the “Confederation of the Polish Crown” party, known for his “anti-Ukrainian, pro-Russian, and antisemitic” views.
elchi reports that TVP has provided information regarding this matter.
In addition to Braun, the European Parliament has revoked the immunity of Daniel Obajtek, Patrik Jaki (“Law and Justice” party), and Tomasz Buczek (“Confederation”).
Separate charges have been brought against each of them:
Grzegorz Braun: Suspected of attempting to disrupt a ceremony in Jedwabne dedicated to the memory of Polish Jews; it is alleged that he blocked the road during the event.
Daniel Obajtek: Accused of giving false testimony.
Patrik Jaki: Accused of insulting (defaming) a judge.
Tomaş Buçek: Accused of violating a woman’s physical integrity by forcibly taking a megaphone from her hands.
This decision by the European Parliament paves the way for Polish prosecutors and courts to initiate criminal proceedings against the deputies.
This step was taken upon the recommendation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs. The committee concluded that these cases are criminal in nature and are not directly related to the deputies’ political activities.
