United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that “The Strait of Hormuz must be opened for the global economy to breathe.”
“Elchi” reports that United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke at the UN Security Council meeting on “Maintenance of international peace and security,” specifically addressing the “Security and protection of maritime waterways.” Stating that the maritime routes, which form the arteries of global trade, are under pressure, Guterres said: “Geopolitical tensions are spilling over into the seas, commercial vessels are being used as leverage, and navigation rights and freedoms are being violated in the context of fundamental principles of maritime law.”
Guterres stated that the disruption of ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of March has negatively affected global energy security, food supplies, and trade, noting that this is the worst supply chain disruption since the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Emphasizing that more than 20,000 seafarers and over 2,000 ships are stranded at sea due to the violation of freedom of navigation, Guterres called on member states to support the emergency evacuation framework prepared by the International Maritime Organization. Guterres stated, “I appeal to the parties: Open the strait, allow ships to pass without duties and without discrimination, allow trade to resume, and allow the global economy to breathe. As the UN, we are ready to support member states in finding common ground. Times of crisis are times of choice.”
