Meteorological experts have predicted that the strongest El Nino weather event of the last decade will occur towards the end of 2026. This natural phenomenon, which is expected to show its effect starting from May, causes a hot and dry period in Asia, as well as excessive rainfall in some parts of America and Europe.
elchi reports that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has stated that sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean are rising rapidly, and the probability of El Nino conditions forming between May and July is quite high.
Expected impacts by region
While El Nino is expected to change the global temperature and precipitation regime, the following impacts are predicted in different geographies:
Asia and Australia: Excessive heat and drought have already been observed in some parts of India and Australia. A warning has been issued that monsoon rains in India could be below average for the first time in three years.
America: Although ideal conditions for agriculture exist in the US Midwest, caution is advised against the risk of excessive rainfall during the harvest season. In South America, excessive rainfall could negatively affect soybean and corn crops. Europe: Heavy summer rains may be beneficial for corn production, but wheat harvesting is expected to begin before El Nino fully sets in.
