Europe’s population to decrease by 53 million by the end of the century

According to new population projections published by Eurostat, the European Union (EU) is entering a period of demographic contraction. Calculations show that the EU population will decrease by 11.7 percent by 2100, losing approximately 53 million people.
“Elchi” reports that population growth is not expected to stop immediately; the EU population is projected to reach its peak of 453 million in 2029.
However, starting from that date, it is estimated that the total population will fall below 400 million by the end of the century due to a long-term decline.
Young population is shrinking, elderly population is doubling
Demographic change will not be limited to numerical decline but will also fundamentally alter the structure of the population:
The number of young people and individuals of working age will decrease rapidly.
The share of individuals aged 80 and over in the total population is expected to more than double.
The fertility rate, cited as the main reason, has fallen to approximately 1.3 births per woman. This rate remains well below the threshold required for population replacement.
