Return to books: Swedish schools abandon digital education

The Swedish government is implementing a new education policy based on returning to physical books, paper, and pens by reducing the use of tablets and computers in schools.
“Elchi” reports that this approach, aimed at preventing the decline in educational standards, is being carried out under the slogan “from screen to skin,” which specifically targets the complete elimination of screen usage in younger age groups.
The government has abolished the mandatory preschool digital education requirement introduced in 2019 and has also banned the use of tablets for children under the age of two.
A large budget of approximately $200 million has been allocated for the purchase of textbooks for schools, and a complete ban on the use of mobile phones, including for educational purposes, has been implemented.
Neuroscientists support this decision, stating that screens create significant distractions in the classroom and that reading from digital devices makes information processing more difficult.
On the other hand, the business world and some teachers are expressing concerns that this analog shift could leave students unprepared for the future digital workforce.
There are warnings that a decline in IT competence in Sweden, which is home to technology giants, could damage its structure. However, OECD officials emphasize that the introduction of technology into classrooms without a pedagogical plan may have lowered Sweden’s PISA scores, but rather than abandoning digital tools entirely, they should be used in a balanced manner.
