FIFA has released an official statement regarding the abandonment of plans to sell certain World Cup rights.
“Elchi” reports that the football governing body announced the project has been halted and apologized for the situation that arose.
In a letter sent by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström to the members of the organization’s Council, it was noted that the federation will improve processes in such matters in the future: “It is now known that the proposal, which was to be approved by FIFA members and the Council, is no longer under consideration. Regarding the closure of the project, FIFA will not accept any attacks on its integrity, principles of good governance, and adherence to established procedures.
Although mistakes were made, all work carried out was fully in accordance with FIFA’s regulatory and legal framework. We will continue to improve our processes by learning from this experience.”
The organization also announced that it will explore opportunities to support the development of football within the framework of the “FIFA Forward” program.
It should be noted that a plan had emerged for FIFA to create a new commercial structure, “FIFA Forward Enterprise” (FFE), for the sale of World Cup broadcasting rights. However, following a potential boycott by UEFA member countries and harsh criticism from confederations, Gianni Infantino withdrew from this idea.
In addition, the FIFA President has apologized in writing to the Council members regarding the situation.
