In January 2026, the air temperature in the country exceeded the climate norm for 19 days (0.9–8.8 degrees), was below the norm for 10 days (0.7–1.9 degrees), and was within the norm for 2 days. The average monthly temperature was 6.2 degrees Celsius, which is 1.8 degrees above the climate norm.
Elchi.az reports that this was stated by Nazim Mahmudov, the head of the National Hydrometeorology Service.
According to him, the maximum difference from the norm in January was recorded on January 12. On that day, the maximum air temperature was 21 degrees Celsius on the Absheron Peninsula (Sumgayit) and up to 23 degrees Celsius in the regions (Astara). The minimum air temperature in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula was 1.5 degrees below zero on January 22 (Baku, Mashtaga), and in the high mountainous areas, it was up to 22 degrees below zero on January 16 (Shahdag).
“On some days of January, intermittent precipitation was observed, with sleet and snow in some places, and heavy and intense rainfall in some areas. In general, 25 days of precipitation were recorded across the regions. The highest amount of precipitation fell in the Lankaran-Astara zone (128.2–206.4 mm), which is 271% of the monthly norm, and in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula (Bine – 48.1 mm), which is 205% of the monthly norm. As a result of the snowfall, the maximum height of the snow cover was 116 cm in Lerik,” – N.Mahmudov noted.
He also stated that in connection with the windy weather conditions on some days of January, 10 warnings (yellow and orange) were issued in accordance with the color scale. Windy weather conditions were observed for 17 days in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, and for 20 days in the regions, with the maximum wind speed reaching 28 m/s in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, and up to 26 m/s in the regions.
