Administrative protocol drawn up regarding those who discharge wastewater into Lake Boyukshor

Since there is no centralized sewerage system in the area of Lake Boyukshor, a portion of the wastewater is discharged into the mentioned lake.

This was reported to Elchi.az by the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Water under the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan (ADSEA).

It was noted that wastewater is mainly formed due to domestic wastewater of the population settled around the lake, as well as wastewater from enterprises operating in the area. The formation of white foam around the lake is likely due to the large amount of detergents in the composition of domestic wastewater. However, the exact results will be known after the taken water samples are analyzed.

For information, we would like to inform you that as a result of the rapid development of the oil industry, starting from the second half of the 19th century, many oil wells were drilled around Lake Boyukshor, which caused the pollution of this lake. The expansion of residential areas around and the direct discharge of wastewater generated here into the lake increased the level of pollution of the lake. According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On additional measures in the field of improving the ecological situation, protection and use of Lake Boyukshor” dated December 26, 2013, the management in the field of use and protection of the lake was entrusted to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

After the scope of authority of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan was expanded by the Decree No. 403 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated June 4, 2025, the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Water under the Agency drew up a protocol on administrative offenses against the perpetrators in connection with the discharge of wastewater into Lake Boyukshor in 30 facts and issued a mandatory instruction to eliminate the shortcomings. Currently, work in this direction is ongoing.
