Although the global market for physical investment gold is approximately $13 trillion, digital gold’s share is less than 1% of this market. However, the growing interest in new digital products and the expansion of investment opportunities create significant potential for the growth of this segment.
This is reported by elchi, citing the World Gold Council.
According to the information, the current volume of the digital gold market is estimated to be between $45-55 billion. In the first quarter of 2026, the total spot trading volume for tokenized gold (an asset that represents physical gold or the right to it in digital form – ed.) reached $90 billion, which is more than the entire figure for 2025.
According to the base scenario of the study, the digital gold market can grow by an average of 27% per year, reaching $160-170 billion by 2031. In the long term, it is estimated that the unrealized potential demand in this market could rise to $700 billion.
“As a result of the full realization of this potential demand, the volume of the digital gold market could reach approximately the same level as the current volume of the exchange-traded funds (ETF) market backed by physical gold,” the information states.
For your information, tokenized gold is a digital asset that corresponds to physical gold, where each token is equivalent to a certain amount of physical gold. The main share in the market is held by “Tether Gold” (XAUT) and “Paxos Gold” (PAXG) tokens, which together account for more than 90% of the segment.
