The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), which provides food aid to people suffering from crises and conflicts, will reduce its operations in the Gaza Strip by approximately one-third due to a lack of funding.
elchi reports that according to the document, approximately 500,000 people will be deprived of such assistance.
Since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025 between Israel and the radical Palestinian Hamas movement, the World Food Programme has been assisting about 1.6 million Gazans monthly, providing them with food parcels, flour, bread, hot meals, and cash transfers. However, since October 2026, only 1.1 million of the most vulnerable residents have received aid. The food ration has been halved, and the number of hot meals provided daily has decreased from 250,000 to 150,000.
The WFP needs additional funding to continue its work. “The agency urgently requires $450 million to continue its critical operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank for the next six months, from October 2026 to March 2027,” the organization’s statement said.
Against the backdrop of reduced aid, the food security situation in the Gaza Strip remains uncertain. The WFP estimates that approximately 1.4 million people – 67% of the enclave’s population – are facing acute food shortages. About 200,000 people are in an emergency situation and require urgent assistance. As winter approaches, reduced humanitarian aid could worsen the condition of the most vulnerable residents.
