Merz comments on agreement between US and Russia regarding fuel

Friedrich Merz, the candidate for German Chancellor and leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stated that the agreement reached between the US and Russia on diesel fuel exports is not an acceptable option for Germany and Europe.
elchi reports that Merz, speaking at a press conference at the CDU headquarters in Berlin, touched upon the agreement signed between the US and Russia on diesel fuel exports.
“Such a decision is unacceptable for Germany and Europe,” Merz said, adding that Russia only engages in serious negotiations under pressure, and therefore, they will continue to impose sanctions against Russia.
Merz emphasized the necessity of further tightening sanctions due to Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy supply.
Stating that Russia will not respond positively to peace proposals, Merz noted that Russia responded to US President Donald Trump’s “energy ceasefire” proposal with intense attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure.
“We are looking for a common path that will help end the war.”
Merz stressed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky can rely on Germany and Europe.
Noting that representatives of Germany, France, and Great Britain met with the US administration over the weekend, Merz said: “We are looking for a common path on how we can contribute to ending this war. There are different opinions on certain issues.”
Stating that they will continue to provide aid to Ukraine, Merz emphasized that they are not neutral mediators in this conflict; on the contrary, they are firmly on Ukraine’s side. Merz explained that the CDU Executive Board met for two days to discuss the situation in the government and the party, and they decided to make efforts to alleviate the economic burden on the population by using the financial resources in the budget.
In this context, Merz stated that, in line with the promise they made last year, they will reduce the electricity tax to the minimum level applied in the European Union (EU) for everyone.
