Scientists Discover Unprecedented Planet

Astronomers believe they have discovered a new planet formed from the remnants of a dead star, which is completely different from those observed before. Experts say this is the first time such a “second-generation” planet, composed of material from the dead star it orbits, has been observed.
elchi reports that PhD student at the University of Warwick, Jamie Williams, who led the research, said: “Second-generation planets are worlds formed from the material ejected into space when a star dies. They are extremely rare, and finding such a planet around a white dwarf star was completely unexpected. It’s like finding a planet reborn from the ashes of the star it once orbited.”
First Observation Around a White Dwarf Star
Astronomers had previously discovered potential examples of these “reborn” worlds around dense stars known as pulsars. However, this is the first time such a planet has been observed around a white dwarf star. Given that dead stars are more widespread in the universe, this discovery suggests that there may be more “reborn” planets in space than previously estimated.
White dwarfs are the collapsed cores left behind after a star has exhausted its fuel. These stars pull in nearby material, leaving behind chemical signatures that astronomers can use to learn about the planets orbiting them.
