An international study analyzing data from the UK, USA, and the Netherlands has revealed a rapid increase in the incidence of certain types of cancer among people under 50. Experts note that lifestyle factors such as obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption may contribute to this rise.
elchi reports that the incidence of certain types of cancer among people under 50 is rapidly increasing in the UK, USA, and the Netherlands.
The study, conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund, analyzed cancer statistics from these three countries.
In the UK, cases of prostate cancer among people under 50 have quadrupled between 2001 and 2023.
During the same period, the number of cases of bowel, kidney, and uterine cancer has more than doubled.
In the US, while kidney cancer cases among people under 50 have more than doubled, an increase of over 50% has been recorded in cases of bowel, uterine, and pancreatic cancer.
In the Netherlands, a significant increase in cases of bowel, kidney, liver, and cervical cancer has been observed among young people.
Experts state that environmental factors, along with obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of sufficient physical activity, as well as alcohol and tobacco use, may also play a role in this increase.
Researchers note that increased awareness of cancer symptoms and early diagnosis have contributed to the rise in reported cases, but these factors do not fully explain the increase. On the other hand, the decrease in lung cancer cases among people under 50 in all three countries is attributed to declining smoking rates.
Experts emphasize the need for further research to better understand the reasons behind the increase in cancer cases among young people.
