Tanzanian President’s husband has passed away

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has passed away at a hospital in Zanzibar.

elchi reports that this was announced by the country’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi.

“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan,” the “The Citizen” newspaper quotes the Vice President as saying.

Ameir Hassan passed away around 08:00 local time at the Emilio Mzena Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for heart disease. Preparations for the funeral are underway in the village of Kizimkazi on the island of Zanzibar. The date of the funeral has not yet been announced.

Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, as well as the presidents of Burundi and Kenya, Evariste Ndayishimiye and William Ruto, have expressed their condolences to Suluhu Hassan. “President Samia has lost her husband, the children have lost their beloved father, and Tanzania has lost an outstanding son,” the Kenyan leader noted.

Ameir Hassan was an agronomist by profession and rarely appeared at public events. The couple had been married since 1978 and had four children.
