Within the framework of her working visit to the Swiss Confederation, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Tatyana Valovaya, Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, on September 3.
“Elchi” reports that during the meeting, touching upon the history of Azerbaijan-UN relations, it was noted that next year marks the 35th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s membership in the UN. During the conversation, the contributions made by Azerbaijan to the work of the UN, the work carried out, and the events held over the past years were highly appreciated.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis shared her views on the role of parliamentary diplomacy in developing multilateralism and the importance of parliamentary diplomacy. The Speaker informed the other party about the work carried out by the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, which has been newly established and already has strong foundations. At the same time, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the world’s largest parliamentary organization, was also discussed. The parties noted the importance of developing relations between the UN and the IPU.
During the meeting, an exchange of views was also held on the important role of parliaments in strengthening democratic governance and other issues of mutual interest.
