The issue of recognizing the events of 1915 as the “Armenian genocide” in Israel caused serious concern for Azerbaijan. This is because the interests of brotherly Turkey have always been a priority for Azerbaijan, and this issue is always a “red line” for us.
This was stated by Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in an interview with “Haber Global”.
“As soon as this issue arose, on the instructions of the President, Azerbaijan began intensive diplomatic activities. We conveyed our messages to the Israeli side that the adoption of such a decision is, first of all, unjust, does not reflect historical reality, and we do not consider its adoption to be correct. The positive aspect is that the Israeli side also took these messages from Azerbaijan seriously. We believe that its further advancement has been prevented. In our opinion, this would have been a completely unjust step that in no way reflects historical reality,” emphasized Hikmat Hajiyev.
He noted that where Turkey is not at the table, Azerbaijan is, and where Azerbaijan is not at the table, Turkey is.
“We firmly respond to every step taken against the interests of our countries, and we will continue to do so,” added Hikmat Hajiyev.
It should be noted that the Israeli government has stopped the process of advancing the initiative to recognize the events of 1915 as “genocide” by Armenians. After pressure from Azerbaijan, the issue of recognizing the “Armenian genocide” was removed from the agenda of the Israeli Knesset.
