Pakistan has reached an agreement with Iran to ensure the passage of at least one Qatari tanker loaded with liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Strait of Hormuz.

The “Al Areesh” vessel, which had been in a waiting position in the Persian Gulf since being loaded at the Ras Laffan export terminal in Qatar in early July, passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday morning. The tanker crossed the strait with its transponder on and is currently heading toward Pakistan. One of the sources added that the agreement regarding safe passage through the strait could also apply to other shipments.
Pakistan has faced an acute fuel shortage since the start of the US operation against Iran. Previously, in 2026, Islamabad had reached an agreement with Tehran on the safe passage of several LNG shipments. However, the reignition of the conflict had halted supplies to Pakistan. The country is heavily dependent on fuel from Qatar—previous supply disruptions caused massive power outages. The agency notes that since February, Pakistan has been forced to spend more than $400 million on LNG purchases from spot markets to replace Qatari supplies.
