After the restoration of independence in Azerbaijan, population censuses were conducted in 1999, 2009, and 2019.
“Elchi” reports that Prime Minister Ali Asadov stated this at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to issues related to the next population census in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Prime Minister noted that during the censuses conducted during the independence period, it was impossible to carry out this important state event in the occupied territories due to the fact that 20 percent of the country’s territory was under occupation and the residents of those regions were forcibly displaced from their native lands: “In this regard, the next population census holds special historical significance. As a result of the historic Victory won by the Glorious Azerbaijani Army in the Patriotic War under the leadership of the President, Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, and the full restoration of our country’s sovereignty, for the first time in the history of independence, the census will be a nationwide population census that will fully cover the entire sovereign territory of Azerbaijan.”
It should be noted that President Ilham Aliyev has signed a Decree on conducting a population census in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2029.
