The number of people infected with rare diseases in Azerbaijan last year has been announced

Last year, cases of three types of rare diseases requiring specific treatment were recorded in Azerbaijan.

This was reported by the State Statistical Committee.

According to the information, the highest number of infections in 2025 was recorded for echinococcosis (a parasitic disease that is mainly transmitted from furry animals to humans and causes the formation of cysts in the liver, lungs, and other organs):

“The highest number of infections was recorded in echinococcosis with 24 cases. 19 people had visceral leishmaniasis (a severe infectious disease that mainly damages internal organs such as the spleen, liver, and bone marrow), and 5 people had cutaneous leishmaniasis (protozoan diseases that damage internal organs and skin, transmitted to humans and mammals mainly through the bites of sandflies).”

In addition to these, one case of rabies was detected in 2025.

It should be noted that the list of medicines intended for the treatment of rare diseases requiring specific treatment is regulated by the Ministry of Health. According to the latest amendment, the number of drugs on the list has reached 141.
