Eleven people have died in a forest fire in Los Gallardos, a district of Almeria in the Andalusia region of southern Spain.
elchi reports that the Gendarmerie and Civil Protection agencies stated that the forest fire that started this morning in Los Gallardos has caused the death of at least 11 people.
It was announced that 3 completely burnt vehicles, each containing one body, were found in the area where the fire started, as well as 8 more burnt bodies near the road leading to the city of Bedar.
It was reported that work has begun to identify the deceased and that a forensic medical team specializing in large-scale disasters is investigating the scene.
The forest fire in Los Gallardos is considered one of the most tragic fires in the country’s history, and the death toll is comparable to the fire that occurred in Riba de Saelices, Guadalajara, on July 17, 2005, which resulted in the death of 11 people. The Andalusian autonomous government announced that 1,400 people were evacuated from the Los Gallardos region as a precautionary measure due to the forest fire and that the Military Emergency Unit (UME) is participating in firefighting efforts with 70 vehicles and a crew of 200. Efforts to extinguish the ongoing forest fires in the Andalusia region, including fires around Malaga and Almeria, continue both on the ground and from the air.
