Baku-Nakhchivan flights delayed due to lightning weather conditions

A number of Baku-Nakhchivan flights scheduled for July 6, 2026, by Azerbaijan Airlines have been delayed due to lightning weather conditions.

This was reported to elchi by Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) CJSC.

It was stated that flights will resume once weather conditions stabilize. Passengers will be informed in detail about possible changes.

“Due to the geographical location and mountainous terrain of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the meteorological conditions observed in the region can directly affect flight operations. In particular, strong winds, sudden changes in wind direction, and lightning activity create additional risks during landing and takeoff phases.

It is important to note that the decision to delay or cancel flights due to weather conditions is not based solely on the weather conditions observed by the passenger at the airport. In aviation, decisions are made based on current and forecasted meteorological conditions along the route, as well as at departure and arrival airports. For example, lightning activity, strong winds, vertical air currents, intense precipitation, low visibility, or storm clouds may not be clearly visible from the ground level. However, since these meteorological phenomena have a serious impact on flight safety, the crew and operational services make appropriate decisions in accordance with international aviation safety standards,” the statement said.
