Due to a failure in the communication system of the national railway network on Tuesday night, all train services in Germany were halted, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at stations.
“Elchi” reports that Germany’s national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, announced that all trains across the country were held at stations due to a technical failure in the GSM-R digital radio network, which provides communication between train drivers and traffic control centers.
The failure in the system negatively affected intercity high-speed trains, as well as regional lines and the suburban train network in Berlin.
Services gradually restored
Following the failure, passengers formed long queues at information desks in train stations, and alternative routes were sought.
Deutsche Bahn officials announced that taxi and hotel vouchers would be distributed to stranded passengers and that trains at suitable stations would be opened for use as waiting areas. Thanks to the intensive work of the company’s IT specialists, the problem in the communication system was resolved approximately two and a half hours after the failure. Although Deutsche Bahn officials did not provide detailed information about the source of the failure in their statements, they stated that the system was stabilized with backup emergency mechanisms and that services were gradually restored starting from the morning hours. However, it was reported that delays and cancellations on lines across the country could continue throughout the day.
