A supercomputer developed in China has surpassed its rivals in the US to earn the title of the world’s most powerful computer. For the first time since 2017, a Chinese computer has taken the top spot on the Top 500 list, which is considered a measure of a country’s technological power.
elchi reports that the supercomputer named “LineShine,” located in Shenzhen, debuted on the list published on Tuesday, overtaking the US-based “El Capitan” computer, which previously held the top spot.
LineShine differs from other high-performance computers because it runs entirely on traditional computer processors instead of the graphics processors used for artificial intelligence processing. According to reports, approximately 42.2 megawatts of electricity are required to operate this system.
Supercomputers, which operate a thousand times faster than a normal computer, are used in critical fields such as medical research, climate system modeling, nuclear explosion simulations, human behavior prediction, and virtual weapons testing.
