“The process of making amendments to legislation for the purpose of protecting children is underway. This process is also continuing in many countries around the world. Currently, similar initiatives are being discussed and implemented in more than 40 countries.”
elchi reports that this was stated by Elmir Valizade, Head of the Digital Media Sector of the Department for Work with Non-Governmental Organizations and Communication of the Presidential Administration, during the public discussion of the draft law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan ‘On Information, Informatization and Protection of Information’ and ‘On Protection of Children from Harmful Information’.”
He emphasized that Australia is one of the first countries to take steps in this area, having imposed restrictions on the use of social networks for children under 16: “Other countries are also trying to take measures in this direction in stages.
This initiative was prepared in accordance with the relevant decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The legislative act was prepared in accordance with this decree.
The decree emphasizes the importance of media, parents, and teachers carrying out awareness-raising work regarding children’s digital safety.”
Elmir Valizade noted that the main goal of social media platforms is to attract users, keep them on their platforms for longer, and generate profit through advertisements: “According to statistics, children do not leave social networks for 2-4 hours. As a result, they adapt to a sedentary lifestyle. Psychological tension arises. Girls are most exposed to the influence of social networks. A luxurious lifestyle affects children.
There are certain grounds for the steps being taken. We must work together in this area.”
