New forecasts released this week by NOAA and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicate an increasing probability of one of the strongest El Nino events on record occurring in the coming months. This phenomenon, known as a “Super El Nino,” has raised concerns regarding extreme weather events such as global temperature increases, hurricanes, and severe droughts.
elchi reports that El Nino, characterized by above-normal sea surface temperatures in certain areas of the Pacific Ocean, is a natural cycle that influences global climate patterns.
However, scientists warn that when combined with warming caused by human-induced climate change, the effects of El Nino could be even more devastating.
2027 could be a record-breaking temperature year
According to Europe-based forecasts, sea surface temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific could rise 3 degrees above average during the autumn months.
For an El Nino event to be classified as “super,” temperatures must rise at least 2 degrees above average. If these forecasts materialize and El Nino continues its impact through the end of 2026, climate scientists predict that 2027 could be a year in which global temperature records are broken.
