On May 5, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, received a delegation led by Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

elchi reports that during the conversation, President Ilham Aliyev’s meetings with Kaja Kallas were recalled with satisfaction, and it was noted that fruitful discussions regarding the expansion of cooperation were held during her visit to the country in 2025.

Kaja Kallas conveyed the greetings of the President of the European Council, António Costa, to the head of state.

President Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude for the greetings and asked to convey his own greetings to António Costa.

Kaja Kallas touched upon the importance of the joint statement adopted by the head of state and the President of the European Council during António Costa’s visit to the country, emphasizing the strategic nature of the relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union in that document.

The guest stated that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the European Union.

President Ilham Aliyev touched upon the prospects for cooperation between his country and the European Union in the fields of energy, connectivity, security, trade, and other areas. The head of state emphasized that the European Union is one of Azerbaijan’s main trading partners, and at the same time, his country has always been a reliable partner for the European Union in terms of ensuring energy security. In this regard, the head of state noted that recently, Azerbaijani gas has reached two more European Union member states – Germany and Austria.

During the conversation, the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process was touched upon, and the steps taken by the country towards strengthening the peace agenda were emphasized. It was noted that economic and trade relations have already been established between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and in this regard, it was stated that the country has unilaterally lifted the restriction on transit goods going to Armenia. The participation of the President of Azerbaijan in the 8th Summit of the “European Political Community” held in Yerevan yesterday via video link was assessed as a historic event.

It was emphasized at the meeting that the current agenda between Azerbaijan and the European Union includes issues related to cooperation in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and other fields.

During the conversation, the European Union’s support for Azerbaijan in the field of mine clearance was appreciated, and it was noted that the launch of the TRIPP project would create good opportunities in terms of regional connectivity.

The head of state and Kaja Kallas discussed the prospects of Azerbaijan-European Union cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.
