Class action lawsuit against SpaceX: Our homes were damaged

80 homeowners in Texas have filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, claiming that sonic booms from rocket tests have damaged their homes. The company is accused of “gross negligence” and “trespassing.”
elchi reports that 80 residents in Texas have filed a class action lawsuit against SpaceX, alleging that high-intensity sonic booms from rocket tests have caused damage to their properties.
According to the Texas Tribune, the lawsuit covers 11 rocket tests conducted between April 2023 and October 2025. The plaintiffs accuse the company of “gross negligence” and “trespassing.”
The lawsuit states that during the tests, where rockets were both launched and returned, homes were subjected to prolonged periods of loud and harmful noise. It is noted that these explosions created by objects exceeding the speed of sound can cause physical damage, such as broken glass, when they are powerful enough.
Residents claim that during the 2023 Starship launch, the force generated by the 33-engine rocket destroyed the launch pad and scattered debris over a distance of approximately 1.2 kilometers.
Although the filing does not detail individual damage elements, it emphasizes that sonic booms can damage walls, windows, and roofs. The plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount in compensation.
The US Federal Aviation Administration had authorized SpaceX to launch up to 25 rockets per year from South Texas through 2025. This represents an increase of approximately five times compared to the previous year.
The company’s operations in the region have also expanded rapidly. A settlement called Starbase was established in 2025. On the other hand, approximately 13 kilometers of the coastline are sometimes closed for access due to the launches; this situation has led to separate legal disputes.
Founded in 2002, SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk holds a decisive position in the company’s management. It is also reported that the company is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) in the near future.
