The Milli Majlis condemns the biased documents of the Belgian and Dutch parliaments against Azerbaijan

The Milli Majlis strongly condemns and resolutely rejects these one-sided and biased documents, which refer to our country’s sovereign territory in a distorted manner and are based on false claims and unfounded accusations.
This was reported to elchi by the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis.
It was noted that the Chambers of Representatives of Belgium and the Netherlands adopted resolutions on April 16, 2026, aimed at undermining the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and the steps taken through the joint efforts of both countries to form an environment of peace and cooperation in the region:
“These documents, which distort the history and consequences of the conflict that existed between Azerbaijan and Armenia and stem from the unhealthy and racist imagination of traditional anti-Azerbaijani, Islamophobic circles, are a gross violation of international law and the rule of law, and a provocation against the ongoing peace process in the region, which is passing through a sensitive stage. The fact that these documents were adopted at a time when the next meeting of the speakers of the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia was being held clearly shows that the ‘initiators’ of these documents are far from the realities in the region and that their true intention is not to promote peace and dialogue, but to incite hostility and revanchism.
The lack of any reference to the historic Washington Peace Summit in the document adopted by the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, and the failure to mention the results of the Summit, including the initialing of the ‘Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia,’ is another clear example of the ‘literacy’ and chronic bias of the authors of the document and those who voted in its favor regarding the subject.
The assessment of the authors of the document, who consider the situation on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border to be militarily risky and use this as a basis for the continued operation of the European Union’s observation mission in Armenia, primarily contradicts the position publicly stated by Armenian officials. As a result of the peace-oriented steps and responsible behavior of the Azerbaijani side, the last two years are characterized as the calmest period without any military incidents on the border, and this is also confirmed by the Armenian side.
To portray persons whose commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity has been proven through a transparent and open legal process as ‘prisoners of war’ and to demand their release is, first and foremost, an assault on the norms of international law, human rights, and the rule of law referred to in the documents in question.
It has been established by relevant impartial international mechanisms that all rights of the convicted persons were protected during the investigation and trial process, and that the judicial process against them was legal. In this context, it should be particularly noted that the appeals made by the Armenian side regarding the release of these persons, as well as taking measures against Azerbaijan in connection with their trial process, were rejected several times by the International Court of Justice in the past.
Similarly, the relevant opinion of the UN Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention dated March 13, 2025, confirmed the legality of the arrest and trial of the mentioned persons by the Azerbaijani side, and the claims regarding the violation of the rights of these persons were not upheld.
We expect the relevant states and the European Union, to whom the mentioned unfounded calls are addressed, to refrain from disruptive interference in the peace process, which is being resolutely advanced through bilateral dialogue, and we invite them to take necessary measures to prevent the repetition of such provocative steps.
The Milli Majlis demands that the parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands put an end to the hate campaign against Azerbaijan and the steps that undermine efforts to strengthen peace in the region. At the current sensitive stage, these steps serve not only to encourage revanchist forces acting against peace but also to damage the declared security and economic interests of the European Union regarding the region.”
