Lithuania protests to Belarus over airspace violation

The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Belarusian Embassy in Lithuania was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Lithuania.

Elchi.az reports that the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has released information about this.

The diplomat was presented with a note expressing protest regarding the violation of Lithuanian airspace from the territory of Belarus on January 27-28.

It was reported that violations committed using balloons for smuggling purposes posed a threat to civil aviation security, caused the suspension of three flights at Vilnius International Airport, as well as disruptions in the operation of five other flights and delays for approximately 700 passengers.

The note stated that Belarus’ repeated violations of Lithuanian airspace are assessed as a threat to international law and civil aviation security.

The representative of the Belarusian Embassy in Lithuania demanded that Minsk immediately stop such incidents and fulfill its international obligations regarding airspace, as well as control over the state border. At the same time, the Lithuanian side stated that if such violations occur again, it may restore restrictions on movement at the border and take other measures to protect airspace, as well as civil aviation.
