The snowstorm and freezing temperatures that started in the central and northeastern states of the country, including Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, have begun to negatively affect daily life.
According to the Flightaware website, which monitors air transport in the country, more than 10,000 flights have been canceled and more than 8,000 flights have been delayed within the country today.
According to poweroutage, an online power outage tracking site, approximately 770,000 people in states affected by severe winter conditions, including approximately 260,000 in Tennessee, approximately 140,000 in Texas, and approximately 125,000 in Mississippi, have been left without power. Up to 10 centimeters of snow is expected in the capital, Washington, and up to 30 centimeters in the states of New York and New Jersey. New York City Mayor Zöhran Məmdani announced that schools in New York will be closed tomorrow.
In a statement to local media, Məmdani said: “As our city begins to experience snowfall and conditions become dangerous, closing school buildings is a necessary step to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.”
The US National Weather Service announced that 190 million people across the country are experiencing dangerous icing in the southern states and snowstorms in the northeastern states.
Officials warned that the snowstorm will continue across much of the country until tomorrow, followed by very low temperatures and resulting icing and “dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts” that are expected to last for several days.
