Arsina Laja Kahing-Nanoh, the mayor of Basilan province, where Pilas Island belongs, announced on her social media account that, according to initial reports, 8 people died as a result of the sinking of the ferry carrying a total of 359 people, including 332 passengers and 27 crew members.
The Philippine Coast Guard announced that search and rescue operations were being coordinated and that 138 people have been rescued so far.
