Former Syrian Vice President Rifat al-Assad has died

Former Syrian Vice President (1984-1998), uncle of former President Bashar al-Assad, Rifat al-Assad, has died at the age of 88.

Elchi.az reports that this was reported by “Suria TV”.
The channel did not provide further details about the causes of his death.
Rifat al-Assad is the younger brother of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who ruled the country from 1971 to 2000. He has been living abroad since 1984 after a failed coup attempt and nominally continues to hold government positions. In 2021, Bashar al-Assad allowed his uncle to return to his homeland on the condition that he refrain from political activity. Rifat al-Assad has been prosecuted in Spain, France and Switzerland for corruption and war crimes. However, the trial was suspended due to his poor health. According to Arab media reports, Rifat moved to Beirut after the change of government in Syria in December 2024.
